SAVING ENERGY IN TEXAS SCHOOLS

Energy Managers

Energy Managers work very hard and save big dollars for their school districts and deserve all the support and respect possible. Nationally, we spend $6,000,000,000 (that’s six Billion dollars) to light, heat and cool our schools. That’s about $115 per student per year and adds up to the second largest expenditure for schools (after salaries). More is spent on energy than computers and books combined. And, according to the experts, up to 25% of that energy is wasted. The Comptroller of Public Accounts has set a benchmark of $1 per square foot per year to light, heat, and cool schools in Texas and encourages all school districts to drive more energy dollars into the classroom by operating more efficiently.

This section of the Watt Watchers website provides some support for Energy Managers as they work to keep energy dollars in their districts. A growing selection of materials will be available here -- from articles in the Watts News that are of interest to Energy Managers, to links to helpful websites, to contact information for State-sponsored support, to other resources and information that will help you do your job. We want to provide you with the support, help, and tools you need to make your program successful. If you have information or a suggestion please let us know.
