Since the state's first big oil discovery at Spindletop in 1901, Texas has produced 54 billion barrels of oil. (One barrel equals 42 gallons.) Some 129 billion barrels of oil remain, but much of that oil lies deep beneath the surface, making production difficult and expensive.
